Quick Monday Hello

A quick post before running off to work.
The retreat was so much fun and I am glad to report that I got a bunch of stitching done. I started to realize how lucky I was that we had this weekend, since the Bargello part of the Hare Pyns pocket took a really long time to get in. The nice thing is that you don't have to count your stitches after you have gotten in your first row, but still... wow, I'm glad that it is done!

Here are some progress pics.
Friday night:

Saturday night/Sunday morning (note my wad o' orts):

Yesterday night:

I have a bunch left to do. One more panel to go - tent-stitch over one. After that, the background needs to be filled in for the sections showing linen and then I'm ready to assemble this baby in class. Someone pointed out that class is the first weekend in October, so there is really not a whole lot time left to play with...

Well, time to get to work.
Thanks for stopping by, as always.
I will post pics from the retreat later this week! :-)
Take care and Happy Stitching,

Spoiled Rotten!

Hi all and thanks so much for all your comments and for all the congratulations on my birthday! Today I realized that I have another reason to celebrate - I have 75 followers! I can not believe it!!! I am so humbled and so glad that so many old and new friends have chosen to stay in touch through this blog.
I have said it it in the past, but I'd like to say it again; if you are a follower on my blog and you have a blog that I have yet to become a follower of, please let me know and I will sign up ASAP! It is so much more fun to have a two-sided blogship going, don't you think?

Since my last post, I have gotten spoiled about 100 times over. The girls at work took me out for lunch on Tuesday and one of them, The Barbarian, even took a break in her vacation to come over and eat, talk and laugh with the rest of us.
These ladies are such a wonderful group. I know that I have written about them before; many of them are now converted to "the dark side:" and we try to meet and have stitch-lunches a few times per week. Hip*Hip gave me a wonderful stained glass frame and she had the really cool idea to take a photo of the lunch group, so that I can have a framed memento. Love it! She also made me a super-sweet birthday card that spelled out "Happy Bird-day" - how cute is that!?
The Barbarian gave me Dreamworks' How to Train Your Dragon, a super-size Hershey chocolate bar (that did not make it back home in one piece), and a funny card that made me laugh out loud. I am really looking forward to watch the movie in peace and quiet next weekend.
P.Snickety spoiled me with a gift-card for Starbucks that I already managed to use up! I bought my favorite drink and a really nice mermaid tumbler, which I am thrilled about! I mean, gold and brown mermaids and coffee, who can say no to taht combination?
Here are a couple of shots showing the goodies:

When I came home after work, DH was already up and waiting for me. I almost passed out when I saw the display that he had set up for me. He is pretty incredible! (I feel very intimidated right now. The pressure is on; his birthday is on the 25th and I am already worried about what to get him... any tips out there? Please - sniffle!? LOL) The flower arrangement still looks fabulous and the scent is so strong in the late evenings that I almost have to open the windows!
Here are a couple of photos showing the "spoiling-the-wife-rotten" arrangement:
As you can see, plenty of chocolate, candy, tea and other goodies together with the purse and wallet from one of the latest Vera Bradley collection, "Happy Snails". And - sweetest of all - a nice cozy fabric basket for Bubba! Bubba seems to really like this one, so we all got spoiled... (Believe me, the birds have had more almonds and sunflower-seeds than they have in months! A bit hard to flap off the couch after all that feasting on assorted seeds and nuts... LOL)
I am proud to say that I have yet to touch the candy. Normally that would be gone in a week or so, but I have been pretty good (I guess that the gigantic Hershey bar took care of some of the more urgent chocolate needs....)
Here is Bubba letting me know that he would like to get out of jail so that he can snuggle with his bunny-basket.
Henny rubs it in by eating some of Bubba's hay rioght in fromt of him:
Don't feel too sorry for him, though; right now he is down here in the basement with me and a big plate of fresh lettuce and carrots. He eats a bit and then he hides for a while, and then he does the "crazy racing and jumping" thing. He looks pretty content with life right about now!

So, on Wednesday I come home and find a slip from the Post Office in the mail-box telling me to come on by and pick up a package from Littlest Sis in Sweden. Wow, oh wow - was I excited! I am almost embarrassed to show you all this stuff, since there is not a chance that I deserve half of everything that I already got. I had to pick my jaw up from the floor many times while unwrapping all the gifts - yes, most of them were actually meticulously wrapped in a pretty orange flower paper, can you believe it!?
I got an enamel pot and saucer with a modern take on the 70:s patterns that I love! It is just too cool for words! Littlest Sis really have my taste down to a T. A bunch of Swedish goodies were cleverly hidden in the little saucer - almost all of it is salt liquorice, so I am in heaven (a couple of the candy bars didn't even make the photo - DH laughed at me when I was sitting on the bed, eating salty liquorice ropes and singing to myself. i know that he thinks I am goofy, but that's all right - salty liquorice, yeah!!!)
She also sent me three books that I am very excited about! Especially the Norwegian criminal novels will be a treat to read! Scandinavian thriller, criminal, and mystery novel writers are quite talented and this author is new to me. I have read a lot of reviews that sings her praises, so it will be great to read over the winter months. Note that she also sent me the little "birds on a string" display, so not I have two. Awesome! That opens up an endless amount of combinations, so the pressure is on!
But best of all was this little purse, which I am sure that she made for me. The ribbons are too cute with one of the most well-known Swedish symbols; dalahäst. (DH can't stand them, but I think that they are really neat. Fore more info, check out Wikipedia here.)
Thank you so much LS - love you and miss you every day! Puss, puss!

One can wonder whether the spoil-fest is done for this year... Well, it's not! As I probably have written about recently, we are going out to the Indiana forest to sit in a cabin and stitch for a few days. I am planning to get there around 3 o'clock or so tomorrow. I could drive up earlier, but DH and I have a hot date down at the County Clerk's office to pay our car taxes and I need to renew my drivers license. It'll be nice to get all that jazz over with, so that I can really enjoy the stitching! L-Bug and Big Dog have already e-mailed me to let me know that they have surprises for me too, so I am thrilled about that! I am sure that these surprises are stitch-related, so I am really looking forward to see what they have come up with.
And best of all, the ladies that arrange the entire weekend got a couple of masseuses to come and take care of us on Saturday! Can you believe it!? The timing could not be any better for me. i have had a weird and pretty unpleasant nerve-problem this past week. I have these pains shooting all the way from my neck down to my calf on my right side. I thought that I had maybe slept wrong or something, but finally today it broke out - an eye-infection. I get these a few times per year and they are always announced by nerve-pains a few days ahead. It is not actually an eye-infection as much as an eye-lid infection. Hopefully the nerves will calm down now that my eye is getting bigger. As long as I can see enough to stitch, I'm happy! LOL

So, have I done anything else, besides getting too spoiled for my own good lately? Yes, I have! I got a couple of quickies done for some instant gratifications and I did also diligently stick to my Hare Pyns. I have even told myself that I am only allowed to bring 2 projects to the stitch weekend. Gasp! That will be a new experience for me... I generally haul about 10 WIPs with me "just in case"... (in case of what? That we get stuck in the forest for about 2 years, I guess...)
Here is the progress of Hare Pyns. Note all the "invisible stitching" in the zig-zag border on the pocket panel. Note also that the entire area on that panel will be covered with twill stitch... I am already excited about that, can you tell? Sigh...
The linen is nice and stiff, so I am not even using stretcher-bars for the Bargello section! See, laziness works, if you only put some effort into it! LOL

This is a tiny kit that I picked up at Shepherd's Bush last year: Easter Basket. Super-quick and easy to finish. I did opt to use a lining fabric instead of glue a felt-circle on the back, which was what was instructed.

The other quickie is a freebie from Le Chalet des Perelles blog called Les Temps de Cerises. I have admired this little chart before, but when I saw Serendipitous Stitching Jo's version with the tiny jewelry cherries, here (scroll down), I was in awe. So I copied her idea straight off - shamelessly!
Our closest Michaels is located smack next to the pet store (which we seem to visit quite often, wonder why...?) so I often convince DH that I need to pass through Michaels real quick, since we pretty much are there anyway... We have had a lot of fun looking through all the beads together lately. I usually describe to him what I think that I need and we spit up and start looking as a team. A lot of fun and let me tell you - he is good! It is so much fun to learn new things about the people you love. This hidden talent is completely new to me, and to him too, I expect.
My beads are not as wonderful as Jo's are, but I am still pretty pleased with my light-red cherries, that are flat stone beads. I framed the pic in my second free frame from Jill Rensel's Studio, so I have now completed my home work!
Here are a couple of pics, since I have no idea where to display this baby:
I love the gingham type linens! I have been thinking that I really need to use the small cuts that I have collected from several stores scrap-cut bins more often.

The weather has been pretty dreary since Sunday. Constant rain pretty much, but not anywhere close to as bad as it has been and continues to be in other places around the country. We are thinking of you and hoping that everything will get a lot better for you very soon!
I should have known that it would start raining on Sunday, since I spent a good 30 minutes watering all the withering plants in my front yard. Less than 1 hr after I was finally done, it starts pouring and doesn't end until 6 inches later... I can tell you that the sun-flower garden looks absolutely terrible. I really should be embarrassed about how it looks, but I am too tired to do something about it right now. I guess I'll just leave town tomorrow... LOL

I have another general piece of news, too cool not to share. Not more than 5 minutes from our house, we have a brand new type of intersection. A double crossover diamond interchange! Here are some photos illustrating the concept:
This is seriously the coolest thing I have ever seen! The team that came up with this solution really did some thinking outside the box! You are driving along in peace and quiet and all of the sudden you are driving on the left side of the road!!!! I almost flipped the first time DH took me through (luckily he was driving, or I would have stopped just to drop my jaw and take it all in....) When Pink and I met to stitch yesterday, we decided to go to that side of town just to get to go through the DCDI. This will probably be a place that people will come to, just to drive through, for months. I know that I will.... :-)

Well, it is probably time for Bubba and me to go to bed. I can't wait to see what size my eye is tomorrow...
Talk with you in a bit and hope that you get a lot of stitching in this weekend!

HooT - HooT!!!

I finished the piece for the exchange on the upcoming retreat - with 5 days to spare! :-) I decided to stitch up one of the latest Just Nan's; the little orange needle-book owl Ollie. The timing was pretty much perfect; I had pre-ordered a lot of Nan's fall designs weeks back through Silver Needle and the package arrived on Wednesday (I did get Percy too...). How is that for destiny!? Good to not have to make a decision on my own! LOL

It stitched up pretty quickly, even though there were lots of color changes for a relatively tiny design - a very characteristic Just Nan piece.
What I really like about her designs is that they have a lot of impact with bold colors - even though they often are small -, not too much stitching, and stitched with DMCs. That is great, since the design can be stitched several times, so it is a good value!

I bought a linen piece from SN that was especially cut up for Ollie. SN gets an A+ for the size of the cut; if I had planned my stitching placement a bit better, I could probably have squeezed in 5 more Ollies... Now, I will get at least three more, which is cool. I liked the idea that Nan suggest; "snap on a branch for fall decor" - how super-cute would that be!?

Anyway, I'd better stop typing and just show off Ollie - DH has already passed ou t on the couch at 9:58 PM... - hoot-hoot!

Take care and have a wonderful Labor Day if you live in the US!

Gifts from Sweden!

Hi everyone and Happy Long Weekend, if you live in the US. I have grand plans for the extra day off - oh, stitching, jewelry making, sewing, finishing and all that jazz. I already have a feeling that much will come to be neglected, but a girl can dream, right!?

DH and I are laying the hash trail for today (we are the "hares"), so that takes a lot of planning. It is fun and you get a lot of exposure to new neighborhoods, so I really enjoy it. DH and I just got done mapping the trail through Map My Run, which is a really cool tool. We are looking forward to a 3.5 mile trail in about 95 degrees (I'll make sure that DH drinks some non-dehydrating liquids both before and after...).
If you are curious about what hashing is, here is a link! Hashing (read under the heading "Events" to get a better feel for what hashing is. Try it out - you may like it!)

So, my birthday is on Tuesday next week. The reason why I am mentioning this is that I already got a package from my parents in Sweden. They send the coolest gifts! Of course I just had to tear this baby open once I had picked it up from the post office! Let me show you:
A really cool wall decoration with tiny blackbird clips on a string - so I can hang small ornaments or pretty post-cards on the wall. I already have grand plans for this one! I only need to figure out where to hang this, so that real birds don't start hanging from it... you know they will, any chance they get!

I did get a large bag packed to the edge with Rhubarb-&-Cream tea - my favorite tea. There are such wonderful tea-shops in Stockholm. You go in and enjoy all the fragrances, look at the large collections of tea boxes, tea sets, mugs and accessories and sniff all the yummy teas. the teas are sold per weight and it is really hard to leave the store without a collection of paper bags and a few pretty tins for the collection at home. I recently ran out of the R&C tea that I brought back from my latest trip home, so I am really excited about sitting down with a cup of this fantastic drink. (Check out some pics and reviews from a couple of examples: Java and Esters. It cracks me up that this site has reviews from 24 tea shops in Stockholm compared to 10 in London, UK, 9 in Warsaw, Poland, and 6 in Paris, France - I have to write out the countries, since we have Warsaw, London, and Paris here in KY! LOL It is easy to conclude that Swedes love their tea and coffee!)

Some bird clothes-pins. My mom and I collect these, so whenever we find a new version, we buy a pack for both of us. I think that we are up in 4 different types now!

A very pretty felted pot-and-pan coaster. Is this not just wonderful with read pears that also look like hearts? I love the colors, they style, and the feel. It will be treasured and used very carefully - and definitely NOT as a coaster. :-)
Some woven and very sturdy pot-holders. I think that they are too pretty to be used as such, so I will just use them as doilies.
They always pick out the pretties cards too. I think that they generally try to find cards with birds, since birds is a topic that all of us are fascinated by. This time it was a really neat golden lady.

And finally, a wonderful book about Swedish and Norwegian folklore. I am pretty sure that it was L-bug who sent me a link and as soon as I saw this book, I called home and hinted that this would be a great B-day gift. It is absolutely beautiful! There are gorgeous clothes for weddings, every-day life, church, winter, summer - all is covered. The photos are fabulous and very colorful, which is so interesting, since Swedes generally claim that we are "afraid of color". Well, clearly, that is just one of those "self-critical truths" that Swedes are all to good at coming up with... Anyway, the book is so cool, because it is written in English, Norwegian and Swedish. Everything is written in English, but the chapters covering Swedish traditions are written in Swedish also, and the same is true for the sections covering Norwegian folklore. I am looking forward to read a bit Norwegian to see if I can figure out what is says before I read the English text right next to it.

All these gifts are treasures; I can tell that my parents put a lot of thought and planning into all the presents and I feel so spoiled and loved. Tack mamma och pappa!!!!

Well, I need to get back to my stitching. It was recently brought to my attention that we are having an exchange in our all-stitch-weekend, which is coming up very speedily - next weekend, as a matter of fact. A bunch of girls get out into the country and stitch for three days straight. No disturbances from the outer world. We stitch, eat, sleep, repeat over a long and relaxing weekend. We don't have to work on anything but our projects and I can assure you that there is no opportunity to starve during the retreat either. Great home-cooking with salad-bar and desserts. It is truly a weekend to treasure and you feel completely pampered and re-energized when it is time to get back home on Sunday afternoon.
Anyway, after seeing Bzz-Bzz-Bee's super-cute Just Nan birdie, Daisy, I had to stitch up something too. I am still working on the crosses, but I am hoping to finish up the project on Sunday... (I promise to post a pic as soon as I can!) Then it's back to Hare Pyns!

Have a fantastic weekend with lots of stitching and I hope that all of you are safe out in this crazy weather!
Happy Stitching to all,

Wow - it's already Tuesday!?

That is pretty much how my weeks feel like right now. Sorry about being absent - I have tried to keep up with all of your blogs, but I fell short around Saturday... It seems that a lot of things are going on right now. Work is getting busier, which is great, and I seem to have things going on in the evenings and weekends too, which is not all that common for me. I like it!

Let me just say, as always, thanks for all your comment - it is so much fun to hear from you!
Oh, and Gwen from Guava Gems Blog posted her second post on the Brightneedle Blog, which was really cool! She is making a small needle-book that will look just adorable - and she finished all the stitching over just a weekend! The pattern is called Pumpkin Flowers and is too cute. I have never seen it before, so that was extra exciting. (I need to get my BN charts out and get going too!)

So, to make sure that I don't forget, here is August's TUSAL update - tadaaah!
(Well, that was really more of an introduction than needed; not a whole lot going on in my TUSAL jar right now. I have tiny pieces of Hare Pyns silk floss on top and I have already forgotten what the last project I really sat and stitched on was... my short-term memory has been gone for a really long time. At least, I think so.... Oh, never mind, I think it was the Noel Quadrielle!)

Moving on to the small progress on the Hare Pyns project. I have finished stitching all the "smalls" now, so the main part is left - the pocket. It is stitched as three panels on the same piece of linen and to finish the piece, the panels are simple folded up. The panel that I am currently working on will be the "inside panel" - the one that, together with the back, will make up the actual pocket.
The fabric in the picture showing all parts will be the lining fabric.
As I mentioned in my last post, these areas take a while to stitch since every last linen-thread is covered with some sort of stitch. I have 4 more zig-zag rows, that will be snugged in under the first row, to go and then the motif-stitching is complete on the inside panel. After that, I am afraid that I will spend quite a few evenings on filling in the back-ground with some type of darning stitch. It will look really nice though.
As you probably notice, I am cheating on the year too. I took the class back in 2007 and I simply refuse to try to chart out 2011, so 2007 it is. As a matter of fact, the charted 2011 is not even included in the chart-pack that the rest of the group got this year, so we are all out SOOL.
Do I dare writing that I believe that the middle panel will stitch up quickly!? It is all Bargello, so I have a feeling that it will be relatively painless compared to the "flap-panel" which is stitched entirely in tent-stitch and darning stitches... I am still looking forward to stitching that piece!

I also want to show some more crazy sun-flower pics from my garden. I know that it looks like total anarchy - and it is - but I like it.
To re-cap, this was the "weed" that self-germinated. Still going strong:
This is the mix of flowers that I planted about a month ago. No rules were followed when planting these babies - a mix of three-four seed-types were thrown into the ground (way too close together) and I did not go through and pull out the smaller seedlings after things started to come up.
Here are a couple of the weaker ones, happily crawling on the walking path:
This type looks almost black when the sun does not shine through it. It makes me think of the Disc-World's Death's sun-flower garden:
Aren't these just gorgeous in all their glory?:
And here is a part of this craziness (poor neighbors!):

I also have to show you a pic of a very tired and cozy bunny...
Currently, he is happily jumping, leaping, running, spinning, and I don't know what, around the basement, where the rest of us are blogging from right now. All the noisy parrots are in bed and it is a grand time to be a tiny black bunny. We all learned that bunnies are treated like Royalty here - from a pellet only diet, Bubba has now also added apples, carrots, lettuce, grapes, bunny treats (he hates all of them!), hay, grass to his repertoire AND he has moved into the guest-bedroom! He is living a posh life, let me tell you! He may need to be re-named Bubba Hilton, if this keeps up... We are getting to know each other better, which is a lot of fun. I have even gotten licks and that head-bump that means "I need my cheeks rubbed right about now, please!".

Other than that, not much going on. I did drag my own, DH's and a friend's butts over to a party on Friday. We had a really nice time, but at about 11.10 PM, I said enough and drove everyone home again. It was a good time and we did meet a bunch of friends that we don't normally get to hang out with. The host-couple has had this party every year for probably 5-10 years now. Everyone is welcome, including people they don't know "as long as you would invite them into your own home". What is really neat is that the party has gone from a "get as drunk and obnoxious as you can" type deal to more of a family party. There are more and more kids running about and this year they even rented a bouncy castle from small and big kids.

On Saturday, DH and I drove over to see our three God-children. We had a fabulous time. You remember how much fun the part was, back in the less-golden years? Yep, we got to experience that again. Climbing trees, going down on the slides, swinging on the swing set. The kids are too cute, but of course I forgot the camera at home. :-(

Finally, I promised weeks ago to tell you why we had to go to the ER. Well, after all my years of nagging, as all good wives do, about the importance of a healthy life-style, it finally happened - DH's total lack of bodily care caught up with him. I think just hope that he has been scared straight for a couple of months...
This s what happened; DH works nights and was just getting up and ready for work on a Wednesday evening around 8 PM. He was off the night before and had spent pretty much all day lying around, playing video games, drinking beer and napping. In addition, on Tuesday night, he had been playing out-door soccer, in an open field in 98 degree weather. Yep, you all know where this is headed....
I hear a bang from the bathroom and rush over to see what is going on. DH is just getting back up from the floor looking mighty embarrassed and confused. "I just fell" he says - yes, of course he hit his head on the way down. He proceeds to go to the kitchen to get a drink and since I am a bit worried at this point, I follow him. Luckily - he passes out again! I manage to, somehow, catch him (I am not short with my 5.6, but this man is a tall 6.3) and lower him to the floor. Seeing that this is my exceptionally stubborn husband, I decide to straddle him to make sure that he does not get up and insist on going in to work... sigh. (Anyone else have a stubborn man in their life, or am I the only lucky one? LOL) At this point, he is white, clammy, cold, and can not focus. I grab the phone, manage to remember the emergency number (yes!), and have just about time to think "wow, I am really doing great, keeping clam and all", when they answer on the other side and panic just seems to rush in and drown me. It feels like I can't breathe (I really understand that saying about "a weight on ones chest" now) and my voice comes out as yells in staccato - I even have a hard time remembering our house number. It is all I can do not to start crying out of shear stress and fear.
Well, an ambulance gets sent over, which I have to run out in the street to wave down from one block north-over (How can that happen? Don't they have GPS!? Or maybe I really did get the house number wrong...) Plus at the same time, I am dressing DH and asking him stupid questions like "Can you feel both your arms?" and "Do you have any tingling sensations?".
So, there we were - 3 firefighters, DH, and I squeezed into our minute bed-room. It would have been quite amusing, if it wasn't for the fact that I wasn't still pretty upset. All the standard tests were carried out and it was concluded that it was dehydration. Phiew! Here, just to amuse myself and make sure that DH would have to listen, I started to ask the FF really stupid questions, like "Tell me, I am not sure whether this is true or not, bu I have heard that it may not be a really great idea to play soccer in 98 degrees and go out for beer afterwards?" and "I am curious to know, if you may be so kind as to tell me, what is the better drink - water or Mountain Dew?". Show us that the nagging wife was right all along....
We got to chose whether we wanted them or me to get him to the ER. Seeing that he hit his head earlier, I insisted that they'd take him over. Well, that was lucky - the head and spine were fine( and I did get the satisfaction of seeing the doctor slap a neck brace on DH while DH gave me dirty looks...) but he needed O-N-E G-A-L-L-O-N of liquid before he could pea. I mean, really!? What was he thinking!? I did the typical emotional journey from "Thank God that he will be all right!" to "What the Hell can he have been thinking!?". We got out of the ER at 2 in the morning and by that time I was cranky!
Well, all in all, I am glad that he is all right an that he may have learned something... After all, he heard the firefighters tell me all about how to avoid dehydration... ;-)

So, on that note I will end with a couple of facts that my buddy Froggie sent me a while back:
WATER
- 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
- In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is mistaken for hunger.
- Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
- Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
- A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

Who knew?
Take care, Happy Stitching, and Stay Hydrated!
